Worked for about 30 minutes then started to get hot and smoke. Changed the filter on the side and worked for 5 mins and did the same thing very disappointed. Though this being a shurhold product would work like a champ.
Several reviewers here were disappointed that this machine was louder than expected, or complained that it ran hot. One even complained that Shurhold includes a spare set of brushes, for free. Here's the straight scoop.I own two of these and two of the 'other' high-end buffers. This buffer is virtually identical to the highest rated pro tools (dewalt, milwaukee etc.). It really is intended for PROFESSIONAL users. This means that it will be just as loud (~84 decibels!) and draw just as much cu…rrent (12-Amps!) as other professional machines. This also means you will need to use hearing protection, just like the others. This also means that after a couple HUNDRED HOURS of heavy usage, you will need to replace the brushes, just like the others.Likewise, because all high-powered motors that run on alternating current will overheat if they don't get enough voltage/current, this means that you can't just use any old 14-16 gauge extension cord. The voltage drop across an undersized extension cord will cause the motor to overheat and (eventually) fail.If you understand these concepts, or if you just read the owners manuals for this and similar professional tools, you will find this is universally true.If you buy this buffer, you will need three things:(a) the upper-body strength and mass to handle the torque it makes...(b) hearing protection to shield your ears from 84 decibels and...(c) a source of electricity that can deliver an minimum or 12-amps @ 115v -- at the FAR end of any extension cord you will be using. Typically, this means a 12 gauge or preferably a 10 gauge cord, which you will NOT find at Wal-mart!Shurhold's other buffers (like the Dual-Action 3100) use MUCH less amperage and are suitable for casual or occasional light work. I own a couple of those too...but they can't handle a hundred or so square feet of moderately oxidized gelcoat.I'm just wanting to save some folks here the time and trouble of buying and returning one of these.Great tool for an informed buyer!
Used on boat. Broke after less than a hour
I'm using this to sand the pontoons on my boat. It's working very well and it is easy to use.
no more D handle
I was familiar with the polisher and wanted one.
It was what I expected
Good power
I have not used it yet. Seems to be well made. My observation right now is that the buffing pads and applicator pads all seem to be too small to cover the backing plate. I have about 1/4" of the backing pad showing all around the circumference and I'm concerned about this bare edge cutting against the hull surface of my boat. Is there a smaller backing plate that I should be looking at or should I look at getting 7" buffing pads and applicators that will fit. The red micro fiber pad slides… over the backing plate just fine. Not sure why they recommended the 6 1/2" pads for this machine.
If you like junk that breaks on first use, this piece of drek is exactly what you want. First one arrived broken...gears grinding and second one started the same noise on first useage. Bad design, cheaply made, stay away.
